At Music Makers ATL, we provide expert music lessons tailored to your needs. With over 20 years of performance and teaching experience, Dr. AJ ensures that each student grows in their musical journey. Our small group classes build musicianship through theory, ear training, and sight-reading by using students’ band or orchestra instruments, along with the steel drum as a fun, engaging tool for learning music theory.

Hello! My name is AJ de Coteau, Dr. AJ to my students. I am a proud DAA parent and a dedicated music educator with over 20 years of experience as a steel pan performer and teacher. Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, I began playing the steel drum at the age of four, and it’s been a lifelong passion ever since.
I hold a Ph.D. in Education, a Master’s in Music Education, and a Bachelor's degree in Music (Performing Arts). Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of teaching music at all levels—from K-12 classrooms in both Trinidad and the U.S., to university-level courses at the University of Delaware, mainly in music teacher preparation programs.
My teaching blends strong academic foundations with a deep cultural and performance-based approach. Whether you're new to music or an experienced player, my goal is to help you grow as a confident, well-rounded musician while having fun along the way.
Program Details & Tuition Information
Dates: Aug 2025 to May 2026
Registration is $50 and includes all materials (theory workbook, sheet music).
Registration is free when annual tuition is paid in full.
Each small group class meets 3 hours per month.
Ex: Music Theory I is $35 per hour. With 3 hours of instruction per month over 10 months, the annual tuition is $1,050 or $105 per month.
